between rick santorum and mitt romney, prompted some democrats to weigh in. >> it was not much change, you know. unemployment is terrible. >> reporter: mitt romney will vote in the massachusetts primary later today. this morning, he appeared via satellite at the national conference for apec, a pro- israel lobbying group. >> i'm sorry that my super tuesday traveling schedule prevents me from being with you in person. >> reporter: santorum went to make his speech in person. >> as you know, this is a somewhat important day in my life today. >> reporter: 1400 delegates are up for grabs. that's more than one-third of the total needed to clinch the gop nomination. newt gingrich rallied supporters in huntsville, alabama. voters there won't go to the polls until next week. but he's focused on the south. >> we're going to carry georgia by a big margin tonight. we'll do much better than people expect in other states.

>> ron paul is holding campaign events in north carolina and idaho. two caucuses where he is hoping to capture his first win. and the presidential primary election will be held here in maryland on monday, april 3rd. tj lane is expected to go before a judge today. denise is in the newsroom to explain today's hearing. >> reporter: prosecutors are asking a judge to limit the release of information about lane. the 17-year-old is charged with three counts of aggravated murder and attempted murder. police say last month, police opened fire in the cafeteria of chardon high school. three students died. several others were seriously injured. police records and court records show lane had a troubled childhood. he was charged with juvenile assault for putting his uncle in a choke hold and punching him in the face. >> reporter: another hearing is

scheduled for march 19th. a baltimore city police officer is suspended as a result of an investigation into the death of a 13-year-old girl. derek valcourt explains, two juveniles are in custody for what police say was an accidental shooting. >> reporter: so far, police will only say that they have uncovered questions about that officer's conduct after the shooting. that officer was off-duty and apparently knows at least one of the children involved. >> reporter: detectives say 13- year-old monet turnage was inside the home saturday night. they were playing with a gun when it went off. monet was shot in the chest and killed. then police say two boys dragged her into the alley and hid her body. monet's mother said when her daughter failed to come home, she personally questioned the boys who were with her. >> i couldn't get a straight story out of either of them. >> reporter: turnage says the story of what happened doesn't add up.

>> we all know things happen. dial 911. what else can you do? somebody is hurt. and you witness it. you don't try to cover it up. you try to get them help. >> i really don't understand the story. i don't think that she was playing with a gun. >> they say monet was terrified of guns and wouldn't be around one. police say turnage was shot with a 22-caliber rifle. and say they are still trying to figure out who owns the gun. >> how did they get this gun? how was it unsecured? and how did it end up in the hands of a 12- and 13-year-old. >> reporter: monet's family is left to mourn the life of girl cut short. >> the two boys, ages 12 and 13, face charges of involuntary manslaughter. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> monet turnage was an 8th grader at william c. march middle school.

we will have much more on this investigation coming up all new at 5:00 and 6:00, on wjz. another maryland child is dead from playing with a gun. this time, it's a 4-year-old boy, on maryland's eastern shore. it happened on old railroad road in salisbury. maryland state police say 4- year-old jamal wolford junior was playing with his father's gun when it went off. the boy got a shot in the chest and died from his wound in the hospital. a baltimore county volunteer firefighter is seriously hurt, trying to free a car accident victim. the vehicle went off the guardrail this morning, trapping the driver. 22-year-old michael murphy was rescuing the driver, when he was hit by a very large tree limb. murphy has been treated and released from shock trauma. the driver is hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries. murphy is a volunteer with the lutherville fire department. good news at the pump for a change.

for the first time in nearly a month, gas prices are actually falling a little bit. jessica kartalija is live with tonight's pump watch report. >> every little bit counts, right, mary? increasing gas prices dropped by about 3-tenths of a cent. the nationwide average slipped less than a penny today. it's enough to end the streak of price hikes. pump prices rose about 28 cents during that gas period. last month, average cost for a gallon of regular was $3.52. gas already tops $4 per gallon in california, alaska and hawaii. mary? >> despite today's drop, analysts predict prices will continue to rise over the next several weeks. harrowing stories of survival. hundreds of national guard troops are rushing to the nation's heartland to help victims of this week's devastating tornadoes. greg black reports, some are

telling their tales from hospital beds. >> reporter: jason miller tried to help a family survive in indiana. but it swept him away, ultimately, killing all five, including 14-month-old rachel babcock. miller survived but said he saw death over his door. >> i put my arm over angel and was like, get down. i told her, lay down flat. kind of reached my arm in and said, get in, lay down flat. and i just started praying. >> reporter: a mother in indiana successfully used her body to shield her two kids. but she ended up losing one leg above the knee and the other leg above the ankle. >> i was reaching around, holding them. and trying to keep everything away from them so it didn't hit them. i had two steel beams on my legs. and i couldn't -- i couldn't move.

a giant avalanche rolls through a french ski resort. and it's all caught on video. skiers watch in awe, as snow came tumbling down the mountain side, demolishing the ski lift in its path. even though you don't see anyone, dozens of skiers were on that lift when it was struck. thankfully, nobody was hurt. tens of thousands of fans come to town for basketball's final four later this month. [ chanting ] >> drivers are chanting, malachi must go. they're referring to malachi hall, director of the taxicab bureau. drivers are upset, he's enforcing old rules, like making them have two-way radios in their cars. they say they can't afford the fees and if the city makes them go through with it, they'll stop driving. at war with baltimore's city hall, some residents are angry about thousands of

dollars in sidewalk repair citations. tonight, wjz investigates. adam may discovers homeowners aren't the biggest offenders. it's actually the city. there's a lot more sidewalks. >> ronald monk is furious with city hall, after the city says it is going to repair the section of sidewalk. more than a dozen residents in this lakeland neighborhood got citations. >> can you mmm measure -- measure it for me? how long is this brake? >> roughly half an inch. >> reporter: he says his wife who walks with a walker has no problem with this. and this cabinet maker who uses a ruler every day, says inspectors want to fine him too much money. >> so they even measured it wrong? >> right. >> this is a city-owned sidewalk just across the street. and check it out.

the dow was down 204 lolsz. nasdaq is down 40. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. the dow jones industrial average chalked up its first triple-digit decline of the year. investors are worried greece is defaulting on its debt. lower face value and interest rate. the s.w.a.t. deal is vital for greece to cut its debt and get a bailout of $172 billion. without the bailout, greece could default on its lone this month. lehman brothers will start paying back creditors, april 17th. a new board of directors will leave the company as it continues to liquidate its companies and pay back creditors. gas prices are lower for the first time in 27 days. triple a says the average price of unleaded gas fell less than a penny to $3.76 a gallon.

now, today, we had the sunshine return. even though there's a little bit of a chill in the air. we're close to that average. let's show you where we tapped out so far today. 47 degrees. the average is 50. so slightly below it after a cold morning. tonight, we will drop down into the 20s. but there is warmer air moving our way. 46 now in baltimore. look at all of those 40s across the map. it is 39 in ocean city. keeping temperatures a little bit down. and you can see that also when we zoom in closer. if you're close to that water, it's in the low 40s. so it will knock a few degrees off of those temperatures. winds are turning around to the south. and that's going to bring up this warmer air over the next couple of days. and we have to show this to you. it is 67 in chicago right now. 57 in minneapolis, even near 70 degrees in denver. and all of that air is moving in our direction. so we'll start to feel that tomorrow. in addition to that, though, still clear skies, with high pressure in control. it's going to be a beautiful afternoon tomorrow. the next storm is out there. it won't move our way until later in the week, though. here's part of a warm front

prosecutors will have until july to decide whether there is enough evidence to try the ship's captain. denise? >> thank you, kai. the captain is accused of causing the wreck and then abandoning ship. the state of new jersey is mourning the loss of one of its representatives. donald pane passed away today from complications from cancer. painwas 77 years old. he fought off a home invader now. a maryland man has fought off a state gun control law. alex demetrick reports, it's a legal victory for carrying a concealed weapon for self- protection. >> reporter: buying a handgun in maryland means paperwork and a background check by state police. to carry a concealed gun for self-protection takes a special permit. granted to those. >> mr. woler was the victim of a home invasion on christmas eve, of all times in 2002. >> reporter: the suspect was captured by raymond woller and

his son. he's now out of jail. >> when he went to renew his conceal permit, he didn't get it. >> despite the fact that the criminal lives just miles away. the spite the -- despite the fact that it had taken police two hours to respond, that he had failed to show what period maryland state police call a good and substantial reason to carry a firearm. >> reporter: a group challenging maryland's law. woolard won, on the grounds -- >> people have the right to bear and keep arms in maryland. that means they don't need to prove they have the right to exercise it. >> maryland's attorney will appeal the ruling and will ask for a stay to keep the current permit process in place. >> we are quite confident we'll prevail on appeal. >> but it won't come without a fight here. alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> the lawsuit does not challenge the background checks and other requirements of a

common gun permit. the u.s. is expressing renewed concerns over a banned synthetic drug. mary bubala has more on what officials are saying about the drug known as spice. >> reporter: the use of the drug is now being viewed as potentially life-threatening. this, after three young people in wyoming were hospitalized with kidney failure and a dozen others sickened after smoking blueberry flavored spice. drug experts say it is marketed to young people as herbal incense and creates a marijuana- like high when smoked like a joint or cigarette. investigators say those who have gotten sick range in age from late teens to early 20s. denise? >> thank you; bans on spice are in several states including wyoming. it is also banned in ocean city. you have heard of having your dog spayed or neuters. but how about rat. >> they are asking rat owners to do just that. they want rats, gerbils and

in new england, two men face a judge, after an emotional attack inside a courtroom. relatives jumped the barrier and attacked the murder suspect during a hearing monday. both the men were arrested and charged with assault ask resisting arrest, after facing a judge today, both men were released on their own recognizance. a turbulent end to anti- government protests on the streets of st. petersburg.

riot police were dispersed to help break up the thousands of people who showed up. the protest came days after vladimir putin was reelected for a third time as the president of russia. in syria, a growing number of people are trying to flee. as monica villa mazar reports, more than throe,000 are trying to cross the border in the past three days. these families are among hundreds trying to escape the violence in syria. the exodus starts at night, when it's less dangerous and mainly quiet. but some can't control their emotions. this woman asks, why are we homeless? because we ask for freedom? act activists call it a disaster in the making. 80,000 to jordan. government forces are blocking the red cross from bringing

measuring 4.0 centered in el cerrito. >> we always have aftershocks, or almost always. and this could be a precursor to a bigger event. statistically, looking at california history, there's a 5 to 10% chance that an earthquake is followed by a larger earthquake in the next few days. >> reporter: they were the biggest quakes debbie felt since moving to el cerrito nine years ago. she discovered this huge crack in the ceiling. >> we have mixed feelings because we never had cracks before. and we're right on top of the fault. but it's pretty disturbing to know, okay, we're not foolproof. >> reporter: at the mira vista country club, a shake monitor in the vicinity sent realtime data directly to the usgs. >> everything seemed to be good. >> reporter: pg&e did not report any outages. and the local fire station did not get any emergency calls. what happened in the east bay not once but twice, in just a few seconds, turned out to be

live look outside right now. was asked at the mall, when will spring really get here. and i gave them the meteorological answer. meteorological springs of march. real spring, march 20th. >> and on the feel of things, it's going to arrive tomorrow once again. we've had a few rounds of it. and it is coming back. let's show you today, though, first, before we get to that. we were in the 40s. with that sunshine, we didn't warm up all that much. 47 degrees is where we topped out. slightly below average. absolutely beautiful outside right now. take a look at temperatures at this hour. 50 degrees in cumberland. a little cooler, 39 in ocean city, with that influence from the water, which is still very chilly this time of year. we'll take you closer and show

you a lot of 40s across the map right now. but starting tomorrow, this south wind is going to bring up much warmer air. and these temperatures are really going to jump. you say where's spring? there it is. 60s in chicago. 67 degrees right now. it's close to 60 in minneapolis. and close to 70 in denver. didn't you know, these are usually cold places in march. but that's the air that is moving in our direction. tomorrow, high pressure in control. we're going to see a lot of sunshine out there. and those temperatures jump into the low 60s. then on thursday, we're in the upper 60s. but by thursday, the clouds start to come back in from the northwest. and the next storm is going to arrive. here it is. it's pretty far out there. beautiful day tomorrow. but here come those clouds on thursday. then the rain is going to follow thursday night into friday. when the front passes through, it's going to knock down our temperatures heading into the weekend. but closer to average, nothing all that extreme, as we really haven't had much of that this season at all. on the waters, with this going on. we see the winds out of the
